About Veneers
A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured material placed over your natural tooth to mask the underlying enamel.
Veneers are designed to enhance the appearance of your teeth by:
- Masking permanently stained teeth
- Closing diastemas (spaces between your teeth)
- Straightening misaligned teeth
- Improving the appearance of damaged or broken teeth due to decay or trauma
We Offer Two Types of Veneers:
- Composite: More affordable, easier to manufacture and repair, may require only one visit, and can be removed. However, composite veneers can discolour over time and do not last as long as porcelain veneers.
- Porcelain: Can look more natural and last much longer than composite veneers. However, they are more expensive, require more visits, and are more difficult to repair.
The Veneer Process
During the first appointment, you can discuss your concerns about your teeth and explain how you would like them improved. Your dentist will have a “diagnostic wax-up” made to show how your teeth will look with veneers.
- Local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding gum
- A small amount of tooth is removed from the front surface to make room for the veneers
- An impression (mould) of your teeth is taken using special dental putty
- Temporary veneers may be fitted to protect your teeth while your permanent veneers are being fabricated (2-3 weeks)
- Temporary veneers are removed, and teeth are cleaned
- New veneers are temporarily placed to check fit, appearance, and bite
- Veneers are removed, tooth surfaces prepared, and permanent veneers cemented into place
Caring for Your Veneers
Veneers can last a long time with proper care:
- Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice daily
- Attend 6-monthly dental examinations
- Avoid habits that can damage veneers, like biting pens/pencils, opening bottles with teeth, or nail-biting
