Gum Disease Treatment in Penrith

What is Periodontal Disease?

person flossing their teethPeriodontal disease is the later stage of gum disease. This is when the bacterial infection under the gums progresses deeper and affects the bone and tissue supporting the tooth.

Signs of Periodontal Disease:

  • Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, and tender gums
  • Bad breath
  • Gum pulling away from the tooth, known as ‘pocketing’
  • Pus may be seen in the pockets around the tooth

The infection damages the tissue that connects the gum to the roots of the tooth. Once this tissue is destroyed, the gum pulls away from the tooth, forming a pocket where bacteria thrive. If left untreated, the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw will eventually dissolve, making the teeth loose and causing them to fall out.

Periodontal disease is irreversible, but you can slow down its progression by maintaining regular visits to the dentist and dental hygienist, as well as improving your oral hygiene at home. The key to successful periodontal treatment is early detection and a commitment to ongoing maintenance through improved home care and regular professional cleanings.

Treating Periodontal Disease

While periodontal disease cannot be reversed, it can be managed through various treatments:

  • Professional deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline
  • Antibiotic or antimicrobial treatment to control the infection
  • Surgical procedures to reduce pocket depth or regenerate lost bone and gum tissue
