Dental Inlays & Onlays in Penrith
About Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are restorations used to rebuild a tooth that has lost a significant amount of its structure due to decay or trauma. Similar to dental fillings, they are used to restore the tooth’s structure and function.
The difference lies in their fabrication process. While fillings are directly placed into your tooth and set, inlays and onlays are custom-made in a dental laboratory and then cemented into place. This is known as an “indirect procedure.” Inlays fit into the tooth, while onlays sit on top of the remaining tooth structure.
Inlays and onlays can be constructed using various materials, including:
- Porcelain
- Gold
- Composite
The Inlay/Onlay Process
- Local anaesthesia is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding tissue.
- Any decay present will be removed, and the tooth surface will be prepared for the restoration.
- An impression (mold) of your teeth will be taken using special dental putty.
- A temporary restoration will be placed on the prepared tooth to protect it while your custom inlay or onlay is being fabricated.
- The impression is sent to our dental laboratory, where our technicians will custom-make your inlay or onlay. This process can take up to two weeks.
- Local anaesthesia may be needed to numb the tooth and surrounding gum.
- The temporary restoration will be removed, and the tooth will be cleaned.
- Your dentist will try in the new inlay or onlay, ensuring a perfect fit, comfortable bite, and satisfactory appearance.
- Once everything is confirmed, the inlay or onlay will be permanently cemented into place.
