About Dental Implants

Dental implants are the latest innovation to replace missing teeth. An implant consists of an artificial titanium rod placed directly into the jawbone, acting as a replacement for the root portion of the natural tooth. The implant is made of pure titanium, allowing new bone cells to grow around it and integrate with the newly formed bone. This process, called “osseointegration,” firmly locks the implant into place.

Dental implants can be used to replace:

  • Single Tooth: One implant is placed, and a crown is fixed on top.
  • Multiple Teeth: Several implants and crowns are placed, or a dental bridge is fitted onto the implants.
  • All Teeth: A number of implants are placed, and either a fixed bridge or a removable denture is fitted onto the implants for added stability.

The Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Consultation: A consultation appointment is necessary to determine if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. X-rays and impressions (molds) of your teeth may be taken, and a treatment plan will be created.
  • Implant Placement: Local anaesthesia is administered to numb the area, and sedation can be provided for anxious patients. An incision is made in the gum to expose the bone, and a small hole is drilled into the jawbone. The titanium implant screw is inserted into the bone, and a protective “healing cap” is placed over the top. This is left for 3 to 6 months to allow new bone to integrate with the implant (osseointegration).
  • Final Restoration: Once the implant has securely integrated with the jawbone, the healing cap is removed, and the final crown, bridge, or removable overdenture can be cemented or screwed into place. In some cases, a temporary restoration may be necessary to allow the gum to heal fully before the permanent restoration is fitted.
