About Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a permanent fixture used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is anchored to the adjacent natural teeth, “bridging” the gap where the tooth (or teeth) is missing. This also helps prevent the adjacent natural teeth from drifting.

Dental bridges are an excellent option if you prefer not to have dental implants or dentures to replace missing teeth. Our practice offers various bridge designs and materials, and your dentist will discuss the best option for your specific needs. Our dental technician individually handcrafts each bridge to create a healthy, natural look that fits comfortably with your bite.

Types of Dental Bridges

The main types of dental bridges we offer include:

  • Cantilever Bridge: Features one false tooth (pontic) attached to one crown (abutment).
  • Fixed Bridge: Typically consists of three crowns joined together, with a crown in the middle replacing the missing tooth.
  • Adhesive Bridge: Features a false tooth (pontic) with a metal or tooth-coloured “wing” attached to the natural teeth on either side of the missing tooth.

Bridge Materials

The material used will depend on your specific needs and requirements. Dental bridges can be made from various materials, including:

  • All-metal (often gold)
  • Porcelain fused to metal (often gold or a gold alloy)
  • Full ceramic (porcelain)
  • Composite (plastic with embedded glass particles)

The Bridge Process

  • Local anaesthesia may be administered to numb the tooth and surrounding gum.
  • The dentist will shape the outer surfaces of the tooth, creating a cylindrical shape onto which the bridge will seat.
  • An impression (mould) of your teeth will be taken using special dental putty.
  • A temporary crown will be cemented onto the prepared tooth to protect it while your bridge is being fabricated.
  • The impressions will be sent to our dental laboratory, where our technician will handcraft your dental bridge. This process typically takes two to three weeks.
  • Local anaesthesia may be needed to numb the tooth and surrounding gum.
  • The temporary crown will be removed, and the tooth will be cleaned.
  • Your dentist will try the new bridge, ensuring a correct fit and satisfactory appearance.
  • Once everything is confirmed, the bridge will be permanently cemented into place.
