Our Children’s Dentistry Services

We offer a wide range of services to keep your kids’ teeth healthy and reduce the risk of complications in the future. Our dental services for children include:

  • Dental Check-Ups and Cleans: We recommend regular dental check-ups every 6 months to ensure your child’s teeth are healthy. Regular check-ups are important to prevent avoidable infections and other complications such as cavities and tooth decay.
  • Dental Fillings: We offer non-invasive white dental fillings to treat tooth decay and cavities.
  • Sports Mouthguards: If your child is playing a contact sport, our customised sports mouthguards protect their teeth and prevent dental emergencies.
  • Fluoride Treatments: These treatments help keep your child’s teeth strong and provide greater resistance against tooth sensitivity and cavities.
  • Fissure Sealants: This gentle technique provides a protective seal over teeth in hard-to-clean areas (molars), making them easier to brush and reducing the risk of cavities.
  • Invisalign: If you’re looking to straighten your kids’ teeth without braces, Invisalign clear aligners help straighten teeth without the discomfort of braces.
  • Orthodontic Evaluations: We monitor and assess your child’s teeth, jaw, and bite, making appropriate referrals to an orthodontic specialist when required. We believe early intervention is key for your child’s oral health.

Child Dental Benefit Scheme

For eligible children, Smith Street Dental offers bulk-billed dentistry under the Child Dental Benefit Scheme. Eligible children receive $1,095 every two years for all their general dental needs. Now is the perfect time to book your child’s dental check-up to ensure their teeth are healthy and prevent unwanted complications such as tooth decay or cavities.

Prevention is Key!

Oral hygiene is important in early years to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Regular dental check-ups help your dentist prevent and treat decay before it causes cavities and toothache.

Children should start visiting the dental practice as young as possible, bringing them along to your check-ups. They may be too young for an examination, but the visits help familiarise them with the surroundings, smells, noises, and, most importantly, meeting the dentist.

The examinations will be informal at first, with a quick look using a dental mirror, counting teeth, and looking for signs of decay. As the child’s confidence grows, your dentist will carry out a more thorough examination.

During the check-up, your friendly kids’ dentist will:

  • Look at which teeth have erupted (come through the gum)
  • Assess the development of the jaw
  • Check the soft tissues (tongue, cheeks, lips, and throat)
  • Check for cavities in the teeth
  • As the child gets older, assess how their bite comes together to check if orthodontics is required later on
  • Provide advice on preventive care, including a healthy diet, brushing techniques, fluoride treatments if necessary, and fissure sealants if there’s a high risk of cavities developing.

Caring for Your Child’s Teeth

Oral hygiene starts as soon as your child’s first tooth erupts through the gum, around six months of age.

  • Use a small, very soft child’s toothbrush and a rice-sized amount of children’s toothpaste (contains less fluoride than adult toothpaste).
  • Brush twice a day, once in the morning and before bed, cleaning the teeth and gum area.
  • You will need to clean your child’s teeth or supervise until they are around 8 years old.
  • Encourage your child to spit the toothpaste out but not rinse with water, as this reduces the effects of the fluoride.
  • Do NOT allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle of milk, formula milk, or fruit juice, as these contain hidden sugars that can pool around the teeth and lead to cavities.
  • Limit the amount of sugars in your child’s diet. If they have sugary snacks and drinks, keep them to mealtimes only and provide water and healthy snacks in between.

If your child is prone to tooth decay in their baby teeth, your dentist may recommend fluoride treatments to help strengthen the tooth surface. As the adult teeth erupt through the gum, fissure sealants (a protective layer painted onto the tooth’s biting surface) may be advised.
